Symptoms of Parasitic Infections
An infection caused by the organism known as Guinea worm is fairly well documented in ancient records. The infection is contracted by drinking contaminated water in which the eggs are found. The stomach acid releases the larvae into the intestine. Female worms live under the surface of the skin for about a year. They then emerge. Treatment involves winding the worm around a stick as it emerges. Infections are both localized and general, affecting the entire bodily system. The worms are small, though visible. Parasites may result in skin rashes, weight loss, diarrhea, gas and bloating.
